Galatasaray’s badge is a white oval crest built around an interlocking red-and-yellow “G” and “S” monogram. The founding year 1905 appears in the centre, and five gold stars sit above the badge in the current version.
The letters stand for Galata and Saray, the two parts of the club name. The design comes from the Ottoman-script “Ghayn-Sin” emblem, based on the first letters of “Galata” and “Saray,” and was created by Ayetullah Emin in the 1920s.
Galatasaray was founded in 1905 by students of Galatasaray High School in Istanbul. Its first proposed emblem was an eagle with a football in its beak, drawn by student Şevki Ege, but that idea was replaced by the monogram that became the club’s lasting symbol.
The red-and-yellow colours were adopted in 1908 after earlier red-and-white colours. The stars above the badge reflect Galatasaray’s Turkish league title count, with each star representing five championships.
