Significado e origem do escudo do GD Chaves

Grupo Desportivo de Chaves’s badge is a blue shield with a gold border and the red letters “G,” “D” and “C.” It shows two crossed gold keys in the centre, a grey castle above, and a stone bridge with green-and-silver waves at the bottom.

The badge draws heavily from the city identity of Chaves. The keys are a direct visual play on the city name, since “chaves” means “keys” in Portuguese, while the castle and bridge refer to two of the city’s major historic landmarks: Chaves Castle and the Roman bridge over the River Tâmega.

GD Chaves was founded on 27 September 1949 and represents the city of Chaves in northern Portugal, close to the Spanish border. The club is commonly known as the Flavienses, a name linked to the city’s Roman name, Aquae Flaviae.

The badge has kept the same civic structure across modern versions, using Chaves’s local heraldic symbols rather than a mascot or abstract monogram.
