Boavista Futebol Clube’s badge is a crowned black-and-white shield with the initials “B.F.C.” at the top, a chequered central field, green laurel branches on both sides and the founding year 1903 on a ribbon below.
The black-and-white checkerboard is the badge’s defining element and explains Boavista’s famous nickname, Os Axadrezados, or “the Chequered Ones.” The club is based in the Boavista area of Porto, and the 1903 date marks its foundation as one of Portugal’s oldest football clubs.
Boavista was founded on 1 August 1903 by British entrepreneurs and Portuguese textile workers. Early club emblems reflected its multi-sport character, with symbols for activities beyond football.
The chequered identity appeared in the 1930s, after president Artur Oliveira Valença was inspired by black-and-white chequered kits seen during a trip to France. Modern versions have refined the crown, laurel frame, shield and BFC lettering while keeping that checkerboard core.
