West Ham’s badge is a claret shield with a light-blue outline, dominated by two crossed golden hammers and the words “WEST HAM UNITED” above and “LONDON” below. The hammers are rivet hammers from the Thames Ironworks shipyard, where the club began life as works team Thames Ironworks FC in 1895; they explain both the “Hammers” and “Irons” nicknames and link the crest directly to East London heavy industry.
The shield shape alludes to the bow of HMS Warrior, an ironclad warship built by the yard, subtly reinforcing that shipbuilding heritage.
Earlier badges combined the hammers with a stylised castle representing the Boleyn Ground, but that element was dropped in the 2016 redesign when the club moved to the London Stadium, resulting in today’s cleaner, more minimalist emblem that still keeps the core Ironworks symbolism.
