Everton’s badge is a royal-blue shield with a white depiction of the Everton Lock-Up (often called Prince Rupert’s Tower) at its centre, flanked by laurel wreaths, with “Everton 1878” and the Latin motto “Nil satis nisi optimum” on a scroll below. The Lock-Up is an 18th-century village prison on Everton Brow and has been used as the club’s emblem since secretary Theo Kelly chose it for a club tie design in 1938, seeing it as a distinctive symbol of the district.
The laurel wreaths, borrowed from classical victory imagery, and the motto – usually translated as “Nothing but the best is good enough” – reinforce ideas of ambition and success. After a 2013 redesign controversially dropped the wreaths and motto, fan backlash forced a rethink, and the current 2014 crest restored those elements in a supporter-backed update.
