FC Köln’s badge pairs a red circular crest, inscribed “1. FC KÖLN” and bearing the black silhouette of the twin-spired Kölner Dom, with a white billy goat standing on top, hooves resting on the ball-like circle. The cathedral is the city’s defining landmark and appears in Cologne’s civic imagery, so its outline on the shield roots the club firmly in local identity.
The goat represents Hennes, the live mascot first given to the club by Circus Williams during Cologne Carnival in 1950 and named after player-coach Hennes Weisweiler; the club’s nickname Die Geißböcke (“The Billy Goats”) soon followed. Over time the goat was added to the emblem itself, turning a carnival joke into one of German football’s most recognisable crests.
