The CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores is South America’s premier continental club competition. It was founded in 1960 and currently features 47 clubs from 10 CONMEBOL member associations. The 2025 champions are Flamengo, who defeated Palmeiras 1–0 in the final played at Estadio Monumental in Lima, Peru.
Most titles: Independiente (7), Boca Juniors (6), Peñarol (5). The tournament has three qualifying stages leading into a 32-team group phase (eight groups of four), followed by two-legged knockout rounds and a single-match final at a neutral venue, usually running from February to November.
Qualification: 47 berths are distributed across the 10 CONMEBOL associations – 7 for Brazil, 6 for Argentina and 4 each for the remaining members – via domestic leagues and cups; the champions advance to the Recopa Sudamericana and contribute to CONMEBOL’s representation in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
