The FIFA World Cup Uruguay 1930 poster shows an Art Deco goalkeeper reaching upward to stop or tip away a ball. The composition uses strong vertical movement, a green border and bold Spanish text reading “1er Campeonato Mundial de Football,” “Uruguay Montevideo 1930” and the original July dates.
The goalkeeper image presents the first World Cup through a single dramatic football action rather than a trophy, mascot or national emblem. The Spanish wording and Montevideo reference connect the poster directly to Uruguay, the only host city of the tournament.
The poster was designed by Uruguayan artist Guillermo Laborde, who won the official poster competition organised for the event. Some versions carry the dates “15 Julio a Agosto 15,” reflecting the early planned schedule before the tournament was actually played from 13 to 30 July 1930.
Uruguay 1930 was the first FIFA World Cup. All matches were played in Montevideo, and the hosts became the first world champions by defeating Argentina in the final at the Estadio Centenario.
