D.C. United’s is a black, white, and red shield built around a large eagle graphic. The club name “D.C. UNITED” appears in bold black lettering across a white banner at the top, while the central field shows a white eagle head and sweeping black-and-white wing shapes. Three red stars sit beneath the eagle, above red and black horizontal bands near the bottom of the shield.
The eagle is the dominant visual element and gives the badge a direct connection to Washington, D.C. and American federal imagery. Its wings shape much of the crest’s outline, making the bird part of the badge structure rather than a small central icon.
The three red stars and red-black lower bands create a strong civic link to the District of Columbia flag, which uses three red stars above red bars. In this version, those elements are integrated into the lower half of the football shield while the club name remains prominent at the top.
D.C. United was founded in 1994 and began MLS play in 1996 as one of the league’s original clubs. Based in Washington, D.C., the attached badge connects the team’s long-running black-and-red identity with local capital symbolism through the eagle, stars, and flag-inspired lower section.
