Birmingham City’s badge stacks a stylised globe above an old-fashioned leather football, wrapped in a navy ribbon that reads “BIRMINGHAM CITY FOOTBALL CLUB – 1875 –”. Designed by supporter Mike (Michael) Wood, it won a 1972 competition to replace the club’s use of the city coat of arms and has formed the core of the crest ever since. The globe reflects Birmingham’s growing international outlook and nods to the club’s Inter-Cities Fairs Cup adventures in the early 1960s, when European football put St Andrew’s on a wider map. Occasional tweaks – such as a special 140th-anniversary version in 2015 and subtle redraws of the ribbon and ball – have modernised the artwork, but the “globe and ball” concept remains a rare fan-designed badge still in full use today.
