FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 : signification et origine de l’écusson

The FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 logo shows a black silhouette of a footballer performing an overhead kick, set against sweeping green, yellow, red and orange shapes. The “South Africa 2010” wordmark appears on the left, with the FIFA World Cup mark in a blue panel on the right.

The emblem uses the colours of the South African flag and places the player’s figure in front of an abstract map-like form of Africa. Its visual language was built around the idea of Africa hosting the tournament, rather than only South Africa as a single host nation.

The logo was unveiled in Berlin on 7 July 2006 during the 2006 FIFA World Cup cycle. It was designed by South African agency Switch Design, with Gaby de Abreu credited for the emblem.

The 2010 identity was tied to the tournament slogan “Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa’s Humanity,” reflecting FIFA’s positioning of the event as the first World Cup staged on the African continent.
