FIFA World Cup Mexico 1986 : signification et origine de l’écusson

The FIFA World Cup Mexico 1986 logo shows a red-and-white football in front of two striped globe shapes, with “Mexico 86” written below in green geometric lettering. The design uses the colours of the Mexican flag while keeping the football and world map as the central visual ideas.

The two globe forms present the tournament as a worldwide event, while the ball placed between them links that global stage directly to football. The green wordmark gives the emblem a distinctly Mexican colour reference without using a national landmark or mascot.

Mexico 1986 was the 13th FIFA World Cup and was played from 31 May to 29 June 1986. Mexico became the first country to host the tournament twice, after previously staging the 1970 edition.

The logo was designed by Rubén Santiago Hernández and debuted after Mexico was selected as replacement host in 1983. Its unofficial motto was “El Mundo Unido por Un Balón” — “The World United by a Ball.”
