Southampton’s badge layers a lot of local symbolism into one shield: at the top a football with a halo nods to the club’s origins at St Mary’s Church and their “Saints” nickname, while the red-and-white scarf beneath echoes the traditional striped shirts and represents the supporters. The central panel shows a green tree above blue wavy lines – a reference to the nearby New Forest and Southampton Common, and to the city’s historic links with the sea, shipbuilding and its port.
At the base sits a white Hampshire rose taken from the city’s coat of arms. All of these elements were brought together in a fan-designed crest chosen in a 1974 competition and only lightly refined since.
